Sports Massage at Vi's Therapeutic Massage Saint Paul Minnesota Twin Cities Metro area

Sports Massage is more often used pre-event, post-event or to work with injury rehabilitation.

Sports Massage has a larger percentage of stretching than most techniques. Sports Massage requires clear communication between client and therapist. In Sports Massage client feedback or communication is essential. (No sleeping through this massage.) It is very important for the client to inform the therapist when they (the client) feel they have reached their personal limit while stretching. Feedback is especially important when working with injury rehabilitation.  Sports Massage has active (where the client helps movement) and passive (where the therapist performs the movement) stretching. The emphasis on stretching is usually reserved for training periods or non-event days.

In pre-event Sports Massage the emphasis is on warming muscle tissue to enhance performance. This is accomplished mainly with fast pace compression and muscle rolling or jostling techniques. These actions help to increase circulation to the muscle and joints; acting as a warm up aid.

In post-event Sport Massage the goal is to prevent D.O.M.S. (delayed onset muscle soreness) and return muscle tissue to top condition sooner. This is accomplished with generalized long, broad strokes toward the heart. This action laterally stretches the muscle and helps to flush the tissue with fresh blood; acting as a cool down aid. This is the massage often performed on professional athletes and is often called a rub down.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports Massage is excellent for gently increasing range of motion and overall health of joints, muscles ligaments and tendons. Sports Massage can help release restriction or adhesions and ease muscular spasm and pain. Sports Massage can shorten recovery time and improve performance.

How does Sports Massage work

Stretches help to lengthen muscles and restore range of motion to joints. Hands on techniques help to revitalize muscle with renewed blood flow. Pre-event sports massage helps to warm up muscles joints ligament and tendons. Post-event sports massage helps to cool down the body after a completion or performance. Between events is the best time to work with chronic restrictions or injury rehabilitation.

How does Sports Massage feel

This really depends on where you the client are at the time. If you are between events the Sports Massage will emphasis more stretching and range of motion work. Deeper and more specific work with targeted friction strokes will be applied in areas of tension or restriction. You will need to talk with your therapist through out this type of massage to ensure the techniques are applied at the proper level of intensity.

If it is pre-event (or with in three days of an event) the goals will be more of a warm up session. In a pre-event sports massage compression over joints helps to warm and stimulate the production of protective joint fluid. Rolling of muscle tissue against deeper structure (bone and deeper muscle) helps to flush the muscle with fresh blood creating a more active and ready for action status. Jostling (rocking back and forth) helps increase fluidity of movement in the entire body.

Post-event Sports Massage within 48 hours after an event all work will be very light and nonspecific. Post event after 48 hours any symptoms of injury (strain or sprain) should be more easily distinguished form muscular tension. After 48 hors post event moderate pressure and generalized stripping stokes will be used to help flush areas of tension with fresh blood flow. The goal is to help the body return to a state of balance as soon as possible.

It is very important when deep work is applied that the client let the therapist know if the pressure is ever too heavy or consistently too light.
